NW General Meeting
ATTENDEES:

TREASURER’S REPORT:
A budget for 2005 – 2006 a projected budget for 2006–2007 was submitted.
BUSINESS ITEMS:
- VARIETAL COMPETITION:
- Costs were lower this year due, in part, to no insurance requirements.
- Dinner: The past 2 years, dinner has been hors-d’oeuveres style. Club members will review this format at a future meeting.
- Thanks to all who contributed to making this a great event this year. Further discussion will take place when the president returns.
- Medals were awarded to Franco Sartor, John Taylor, Leo Poirier, Duane Lukyn, Terry Prysiazniuk, Bryon Malthouse, Don Graves, Bob Askin, Peter Huyghebaert, Gary Dobrovolsky, Doug Morrison, Ken Marson, Ian Baker and Don Graham. The Blackberry Trophy went to Ken Marson. Ian Baker won the Steward’s Trophy. George Beck earned the Vice President’s Trophy and Don Graham won the IOF Silver Cup and the Angelo Rizzato Zinfandel Trophy.
- SUPPLIES: Contact Doug Morrison for barrels and corks.
- Barrels: will be available to order until April 20th.
- Corks: there are 3 bags of corks available at the price of $185.44 per bag.
- MEMBERSHIP FEE RESOLUTION: As printed in the Pressing
News. Moved by Rod Church, seconded by Franco Sartor, and PASSED unanimously:
- Annual membership fees in the Nanaimo Winemakers Club are $45 (with the exception of those declared to be Life Members). A membership includes spouses and significant others.
- Membership fees paid prior to January 1st are discounted by $10.
- Fees for new members joining after January 1st are $45, but for those joining after September 30th this fee includes membership for the remainder of the current year and the next full year of membership.
- All winemakers who are members of BCAWA are eligible to purchase grapes through the Nanaimo Winemakers Club without having to be a member of the Club.
GRAPE COORDINATOR’S REPORT:
Members are directed to the new club website http://www.nanaimowinemakers.org. Information on grapes and ordering is available onsite. Members are reminded to order as soon as possible to ensure their priority placing. Also noted that Brehm Vineyards site has information available on their spring sale.
EXECUTIVE MEETING:
The April Executive meeting included some follow-up discussion regarding the Varietal, considered a time and location for the summer barbeque, reviewed a request for standardized compensation for judges, considered some red wine grapes that the club may purchase and conducted other miscellaneous business.
RAFFLE WINE:
The raffle wine, a 2005 Pinot Noir directly from New Zealand was won by Peter Huyghebaert.
EDUCATIONAL SESSION:
Duane Lukyn and panel presented a session discussing and reviewing white wines in progress.
NEXT GENERAL MEETING:
Will be held May 1st. This evening will feature a presentation by Ernie Sargent of 6 wines and examples of food that complement them. Spouses are invited and the price will be $10 each to defray the costs. The raffle wine this evening will be a 2005 Alexander Valley Zinfandel, Sin Zin.
OTHER UPCOMING MEETINGS:
- The April executive meeting is held on Thursday, April the 12th.
- The Judges’ Guild meeting will be held Thursday, April the 19th and the subject will be Ports.
- The Judges’ Guild will host a special session April the 26th. This session will demonstrate determination of medal quality wines. Sam Hauck, the Guildmaster of the BC Guild of Wine Judges, has arranged a special instructional tasting for members of the Judges Guild. This session would also be useful for others who might be wondering about judging and judging standards. If you are interested in attending this session, please contact Rod Church as soon as possible.
