VAWA 2009 Wine Label Competition

This year the Vancouver Amateur Winemaker's Association is again providing a forum for BC home winemakers to see their peers’ creative successes in wine label design and production. We will be recognizing those creating superior labels with individual Certificates of Recognition and with a display on the VAWA website.

This competition takes place every two years. The results will be announced during the VAWA Annual Wine Competition Awards night on April 18, 2009.

Please submit one or two entries, try new techniques, new designs and most of all, have fun with this event.

Entry Guidelines

There are 2 classes for label entries:

  1. Labels with text, optionally complemented with borders, line graphics, highlighting, etc.
  2. Labels with text complemented by a photographic or other graphic image.

Entries may include a winemaker’s name or winery/cellar pseudonym as the judging will be done by professional graphic artists, rather than anyone familiar with BC home winemakers. The wine summarized in the label entry need not exist but the information supplied should conform to generally-accepted guidelines as set out in many wine reference texts. These include: producer, type of fruit/grapes used, and geographic source of fruit; optional information may include: alcohol content, style (e.g., dessert wine), a description (e.g., a fruity….suitable for accompanying…), advice on service (e.g., serve chilled), and relevant technical information. The judges will be looking for labels that clearly convey the necessary information in an aesthetically-pleasing manner.

How to Enter

Mail 3 paper copies of each entry and include a slip of paper with your name, club, and address to: Ken Beardsell, 4484 West 15th Avenue, Vancouver, BC, V6R 3B2. Please mark on the envelope “ VAWA Label Competition.”

To enable us to present the best of the entries on our website, we request that, if available, entrants either:

  1. Include a disk containing a file of their entry(s) in any of the common graphic formats such as: jpeg, Photoshop, PowerPoint, Corel Draw or Illustrator.
  2. Or, E-mail the file to: ken_beardsell@telus.net. Please indicate on your entry information accompanying your labels that you have e-mailed such a file.

Entry Fees and Awards

There is no fee for entries to the Label Competition.

Certificates of Recognition will be presented to each of the winning entrants, either at the VAWA Awards & Banquet on April 18, 2009, or forwarded to them by mail. Each Certificate will feature the relevant label.

A poster of the winning entries, or if possible all entries, will be displayed at the Awards dinner. Winning entries, or if possible all entries, will be displayed on the VAWA website: www.vawa.net.

Judging

Staff members of the Media Group at UBC will do the judging. Their work at UBC involves creating presentations, posters, illustrations, and graphic designs for clients in UBC.
