BCAWA Provincial Competition
May 7-8, 2010
(hosted by Nanaimo Winemakers)
This is our year to host the provincial competition. Therefore, there will be no club competition in March-April this year. You should plan to directly enter the provincial competition instead. Club trophies will still be awarded to Club members on the basis of how well they do in the provincial competition.
NOTE: All activities will be at the Cavallotti Hall, 2060 East Wellington, in Nanaimo.
Tickets, which include the Meet & Greet on May 7 and the Gala Banquet and Dance on May 8 are $50 per person. For tickets, contact Rainer Hocker at (250) 758-7291 or rain-hock@hotmail.com
Friday Events
May 7 early evening: Wine judging
Some classes will be judged beginning about 5:00. This is for judges, stewards, and helpers only.
May 7, 7:30: Meet & Greet social evening
Because the judges and others need to be fed, we are planning a more elaborate Meet & Greet evening than usual. The draft menu calls for appies (sausages, eggs a la Franco, some cheese), followed by a meal of roast pork, risotto, green salad, roast potatoes, vegetables, and desserts. Some of the wines that have already been judged will also be available for sampling.
So come along and join those involved in the judging and extend your circle of wine acquaintances. Your $50 ticket for the banquet included admission to this event.
Saturday Events
May 8 morning and afternoon: Wine judging
As Chief Steward, Don Graham will require lots of assistance on this Saturday, as well as some earlier days. So please be ready to volunteer some time. Helping out is usually educational as well as fun.
Plus Jane Sartor is catering the lunch for judges and stewards on Saturday. Her lunch for a competition judges a few years ago lives on in the memory of judges across the province as the best ever. The draft menu for this year includes: pasta Milanese, hot carved ham, green and tomato salads, bread, formaggio, pickles, and dolce.
May 8 evening: Gala banquet, silent auction, and dance
Doors open at 6:00 for this not-to-be-missed event. Everything is going to be up a notch or two or three from our usual annual competition evening. The evening will start with a selection of medal-winning wines.
Dinner will be about 7:30 and is being catered by Ann Mathews and Occasional Occasions. The draft menu looks like this (yummy!)

Live music—come to listen and dance. Bill Cave is one of the best known musician on Central Vancouver Island. He describes his combo as a three man, five instrument band. He will be playing for three hours and a section of the floor will be set up for dancing. Get your exercise after the big meal.
Silent Auction. The silent auction (always more entertaining than you think it will be) is scheduled to proceed throughout the early evening. There will be surprises for sure. Bring your cheque book, have fun, and take some loot home.
